The first PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR in Singapore’s HDB Estate was launched on the 15th March 2009 at Kim Keat Ave. The very first AED was mounted in a white wall cabinet outside the Adventist Home for the Elderly to allow both residents of the home as well as members of the public to be able to access to the AED.

Security will not be an issue as several measures has been taken. For instance, the wall cabinet can only be opened by breaking a small glass to gain access to the key, which then can open the cabinet. There is also a loud alarm which will sound when the cabinet is opened, alerting the residents and staff of the Adventist Home for the Elderly (AHE) that the AED has been accessed to.

This is a true milestone in Singapore and in the history of Public Access AED. Singapore First Aid Training Centre is also involved in this project – by training 12 ready volunteers and staff to be fully equipped with the skills of performing CPR and using the AED.

This clip includes an introduction by the Chairman of the AHE, Mr Wan as well as a short presentation by VIP for this event was MP Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Mdm Josephine Teo during this inaugural launch of the public access defibrillator AED in HDB estate.

AED Demonstration

This is a funny spoof video which shows how the AED or Automated External Defibrillator is used along with CPR. Before you play, we must warn you of the unclear sound quality…. and the hilarious acting!

This is not an instructional video, but its intention is to educate and provide you with a simple understanding of how the AED is being used. And if you see from the video, AEDs are not hard to use at all! In fact, they are so easy to use, its ridiculous! AEDs come with voice prompts and visual prompts, guiding the rescuer every inch of what they require to do, all the way to the point where the shock is delivered.

Another highlight is that this shows the old method of CPR, where a pulse check is needed. As confirmed by the National Resuscitation Council, the pulse check is no longer necessary to determine if CPR or AED needs to be initiated. In fact, the good old “Look, Listen, Feel” to check for breathing is sufficient.

If all of these confuse you, then you need to be resuscitated in one of classes. Call us to check when is the next available class for CPR. Nothing beats good ol fashion CPR and AED practical on a dummy. Anyway, here is the video. Enjoy!

SFATC CPR Article on TV Health Show

Singapore First Aid Training Centre was being invited by Eagle Productions to provide professional input for a Malay Health programme on Suria called S.M.L @ Sihat. S.M.L@Sihat is a health magazine that broaches the subject of health in a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach.

This episode includes a segment on cardiac arrest. It covers the identification, signs and symptoms, CPR and also an introduction to the AED or Automated External Defibrillator. The skit is a guy who was running on the threadmill and suddenly experiences immensed chest pain. He loses balance, falls off the threadmill but is just saved in time from falling by a fellow gym member. At this point, a close up shot shows him looking pale and sweaty, both signs of a heart attack.

CPR+AED News

Singapore First Aid Training Centre featured on the Suria news. A clip showing NRC accredited CPR+AED course being conducted for Singapore Silat Federation (PERSISI) athletes. Features the full line up of silat national athletes including Mr Sheik Alauddin, former national silat champion. Dr Fatimah Lateef, MP GRC Marine Parade was present to share her comments and teachings to the CPR+AED participants.

CPR News on Suria

The Singapore Silat Federation or PERSISI will be AED equipped for their competition and as a training requirement, we were privileged to have a team of national silat athletes take up CPR+AED course with us. The 4 hour NRC accredited CPR+AED course was different this time, because we were surrounded by the media crew from Suria News who were featuring this event.

At the same time, we were visited by Member of Parliament Dr Fatimah Lateef for GRC Marine Parade, who happened to by the medical advisor for PERSISI. During her visit, Dr Fatimah Lateef shared her knowledge and experience with the silat team and even went the extra mile to spend time to explainand demonstrate the steps of using the AED.

It was a great experience for all the trainers and staff at the Singapore First Aid Training Centre, and yet another milestone for the use of AED in sports today.
